List of the 5 largest companies in Hamburg

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is considered Germany’s gateway to the world. It has the highest GDP per capita of all German states and is an outstanding business location - not only in logistics and maritime transport. This is also shown by our list of the TOP 5.

1. EDEKA Group

EDEKA is a heavyweight in German food retailing and a mix of corporate group and cooperative organization. The Hamburg-based Edeka Zentrale Stiftung & Co. KG, based in Hamburg, acts as a holding company for the group of companies and bundles important shareholdings. It holds half of the shares in each of the EDEKA regional companies and owns, among other things, the Netto Marken-Discount grocery chain and Edekabank. The group includes around 3,600 independent EDEKA retailers with almost 5,700 stores, which generate over half of EDEKA’s sales.

2. Otto (GmbH & Co KG)

Otto is still known as Otto Versand. The focus has long since shifted from classic mail order to e-commerce offerings. Otto’s core business is the retail of all kinds of goods “at a distance”. To this end, the company operates over 100 online stores and is one of the largest online retailers worldwide. One focus is on fashion and lifestyle products. ECommerce trading accounts for around three quarters of revenues. Otto was founded in 1949 by Werner Otto and is still a family business.

3. Airbus Operations GmbH

Hamburg and its environs have Germany’s most important locations for aircraft construction - closely associated with the name Airbus. Hamburg-based Airbus Operations GmbH is part of the Airbus Commercial Aircraft division and a subsidiary of Airbus Operations S.A.S. Within the Airbus Group, Airbus Operations GmbH bundles the production and development activities located in Germany. The largest site is the aircraft plant in Hamburg-Finkenwerder with over 12,000 employees. Other sites are located in Buxtehude and Stade.

4. Aurubis AG

Aurubis, which today employs a good 7,000 people, has its origins in the Hamburg company “Beit, Marcus und Salomon, Gold- und Silberscheider”, which was founded in the 18th century. There have been many name changes and restructurings in the course of takeovers over the years. Until 2009, the company operated as Norddeutsche Affinerie AG, and after the takeover of the Belgian copper producer Cumerio, as Aurubis. Aurubis’ core business is copper refining for cathodes from copper scrap, copper concentrates and recycling materials, as well as subsequent processing.

Update 2023: At year-end 2022, the company announced that a EUR 520 million investment package will be launched to accelerate the company’s growth and sustainability. Concrete measures relate, for example, to the faster implementation of a recycling system at the site in Richmond (Georgia) in the USA and the expansion of the photovoltaic plant for own use in Pirdop, Bulgaria.

5. Tchibo GmbH

Tchibo is almost automatically associated with coffee. In fact, the business started in 1949 as a mail-order coffee company, later entering the stationary trade and expanding its product range. Today, with more than 11,000 employees, Tchibo is one of Germany’s largest consumer goods and retail traders - with around 900 stores, sales areas in shopping centers and supermarkets, and strong online business. Tchibo is wholly owned by Maxingvest AG (formerly: Tchibo Holding AG), which is backed by the Herz family of entrepreneurs.
